How do I get a job as a games designer?
A game designer can be compared to a movie
scriptwriter: the person who has the initial idea and
then writes a document describing every detail of
their artistic vision. Game designers are creative,
methodical, and communicate well. They have strong
technical skills, enthusiasm for video games and
sound gaming knowledge. Is this you? Many
universities run exciting courses, so go for it!
What careers go with ICT?
Whatever career you choose I am sure having good ICT
skills will give you confidence and help you a lot.
Some people go on to web design, business, graphics
work, database design animation... the list is
endless really.
If I alter an image from the internet do I avoid copyright?
The answer is no. The point is how would you feel if
you saw an image you'd created being passed off as
someone else's? Admit it! You would be peeved. Why
not take your own photographs and create your own
graphics?
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is submitting some work and pretending
it's your own. Research is great and your teacher
will give you credit for it. However you must
acknowledge who the original author was and put in
inverted commas anything you directly quote from the
author's work. Don't think you can get away with it
as there are programs which can "sniff "out where you
got the research from.
Do I buy a Windows PC or an Apple Mac?
It depends. What do you want to use your computer
for? Apple macs certainly look cool and you can even
run Windows on the latest ones. If you like ease of
use and love video editing and graphics as well as
the usual word processing etc then a mac is ideal.
However if you are a games freak then a Windows PC is
the best bet. Then again there's Linux, but that's
another story.
I don't have Microsoft Office at home?
Don't worry. OpenOffice is free and some people think
it is better than Microsoft Office. You can save
documents in Word, PowerPoint and Excel formats.
Download it from http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.0/
What is the best way to backup my work?
A USB flash memory stick s the best way to go. Buy
one for £12 from the ICT department with a Marlwood
logo on. Don't forget to take it with you!
